Not reliable

My boyfriend accidentally left his cell phone in the Uber (which is very easy to do), and the when calling his Uber driver back to inform him of this, the Uber driver claimed to have “just met an accident”. How could we be assured that his is the situation?? The driver made excuses instead of agreeing to have the phone. This is happened before with another friend of mine. It is clearly that they’re not trustworthy.
