A company able to withhold your entire bank balance against your will?? STAY AWAY FROM UBER

I know that Uber has no interest in this problem, so I am posting this to warn people not to use this terrible company and to add another one to the hundreds of negative reviews towards them.

I woke up one Saturday morning and saw that there was a transaction from Uber clearing the entire balance out of my bank account. The first thing I did was try to contact Uber, but seeing as they do not have a contact number I only had the option of emailing them. I then called my bank and they advised me that I should cancel my card.

I only heard from Uber on the Monday, where they explained to me that it is an authorisation hold for a trip starting in South Africa and ending in India. They explained that an authorisation hold is used to check the payment method and make sure there are funds in the account to pay for the trip, and then to reserve those funds. This was explained to me over and over, and they completely ignored the rest of what I was complaining about.

The following day my bank account was still empty so I called the bank again to see if they could do anything about it, they said they can cancel the hold for me. Now the problem is I am still left at a loss as a direct result of Uber’s shocking system. As I now have to pay for a new bank card.

I have tried explaining over and over that firstly, I definitely did not order a trip to India, secondly even on the small chance that I did it accidentally, why on earth is their app capable of accepting a trip to a different continent, surely this should bring up red flags? Thirdly can I get an Uber all the way to India for less than R5000? And lastly, if I can’t get to India with less than R5000, then why did the so called payment method test not deny the trip?

The only response I get from Customer Service is explaining what an authorisation hold is, and they cannot seem to see the problem in withholding my funds (which they had no right to do) for 4 days or that they have cost me money in the form of replacing my bank card.

I am just incredibly lucky that my debit orders had already gone off and that I had petrol in my car, it could have ended a lot worse, and Uber will NOT help in anyway whatsoever, they have given a “I do not care” attitude all the way through.

Something that makes me very suspicious is how did they know the balance in my account, are they getting access to more information than they should?

So my final words are, stay away from Uber. I am now trying out Taxify and I have had no complaints so far.
