Account frozen because person had ID book not ID card
My sister's account was frozen, and the consultants at the call centre told her it is because she does not have an ID card (just the old green ID book), therefore they are unable to verify her biometric details (photo and fingerprints) against Home Affairs. Their website however makes no mention of any such requirement - it says to open an account all you need is your ID number, a cellphone number, and be 16 years old or older. To get to a level with higher benefits/transaction limits they ask for you to take selfie, provide a copy of your proof of address, and/or scan your fingerprints - without any mention of any verification against Home Affairs.

15 Oct 2025, 21:40So that was a complete waste of time - Tymebank contacted my sister, only to give her more of the same BS. This consultant did suggest that she open a new account, to which they would transfer her funds, and she would then have to go to a kiosk to be verified - which they would obviously not be able to do, since she (still) does not have an ID card. I don't know what the point of this exercise would be - all that will change is the account number, but without being able to verify her biometrics, I highly doubt they will unblock the new account either.
