Very unhappy

I was at truworths in promenade mall to exchange an item that I got as a gift and I was told that I cannot return an item without a slip, where am I supposed to get a slip for something that I got as a gift, the item is still intact and has the price tag on which proves that its a Truworths item, no dont you think it would be rude for me to ask for a slip from someone who got this for me as a gift, i do not understand this policy now I am being told that the person was supposed to ask for a gift receipt but the question is was she told that there is an option for a gift receipt i think not, because had she been told she would have given it to me.
