R449 for a broken watch

I bought a watch at truworths Promenade for R449 yesterday as a gift for a friend. I paid, got the straps adjusted which I paid R40 for. When I was about to wrap the gift I saw the watch wasn't working. I went back to the shop today just to hear that there's nothing they can do about it because I had 2 links removed. What type of service is that.? I understand the policies but I bought the watch less than 24 hours ago. I was assisted by 2 staff members and non of them checked if the watch was working. I then paid R449 for a broken watch then had to pay R45 for a battery... No man truworths this is not customer service. The lady that assisted didn't even try an help. Just said there's nothing they can do now.
