No exchange without a slip...?

I bought a top about 2 weeks ago and in time threw away the slip. With winter here, I tried it on, it does not fit. Now I want to exchange it, but they refuse to help me without a slip. Really bad service. Anyplace else would have helped me with a gift voucher and converted it again, but not Truworths. What am I supposed to do with the top now?!
