Gift Card Query

I had purchased a gift card worth R600 as I tried to utilize this at the Truworths branch in Kempton Park I found out that I had expired. The person helping me continued to explain that although the gift card contains money it cannot be used nor can I be refunded. My query is that is this fair or legally sound that the company keeps my money without any sort of compensation regardless of the fact that the card had expired ?
