FALSE PRICES ON PRODUCTS

I bought pants that were originally R599 but had a sticker over the price that says 50% off. At the till, the manager said I will pay R440 because that's what the system says. What is 50% of R599 ? Why do you put 50% off if it is actually not ????? is that even allowed ?
