Exchange with no slip

went to alberton city truworths to exchange a pair of shoes, I did not have my receipt with me cause I misplaced it..... I did not ask for my money back but to exchange for something else. It took them an hour to assist me yet they tell me that I cannot exchange because I cannot remember the date and time I bought the item.
