Exchange gone wrong

Went there to exchange an item that was bought by a friend and to my surprise I'm told they can't help cause i don't have a receipt. Tried explaining to the manager that it was a gift and that person doesn't have the receipt. She wasn't helpful at all and still couldn't exchange the garment
