Complaint!

On Sunday 21 August I visited Truworths at Carnival Mall, Brakpan. I bought a few items. When I got to the till to pay, the cashier asked for my ID document which I gladly supp****. I was then told that she had to phone the Head Office. I asked why and was told that because the purchase was more than R2000 she had to phone Head Office. There was evidently no answer and I eventually questioned the rationale of the telephone call to the head office and asked to speak to the Manager. I have been a Truworths customer for 23 years, have never missed a payment and have never been asked to identify myself. The manager by the name of Zondi then came and advised that due to the high level of ***** in Truworths, they have to phone head office. I again questioned the rationale as I was struggling to understand how a person sitting in Cape Town would be able to identify who I am and why I should be put through this cumbersome process. I eventually took out my entire wallet and proved that I am indeed who I say I am. Zondi had an extremely bad attitude and made me feel like a ******** trying to ***** clothes in front of all the customers in the store. I have always had big purchases and have never been approached by any form of management that humiliated me like this. Despite the fact that I could tell her exactly what my account balance was and when I made a payment on this account, she insisted that I was trying to ***** and that she had to phone Head Office. After minutes of changing words, she finally put through the purchase and a SMS was sent to my phone which I showed her. She still had the audacity to look at the SMS without any form of apology.

Zondi’s attitude was shocking and I do not understand how any corporate company can employ any employee at a management level without the emotional intelligence of a two year old to perform their duties. I have never been so humiliated and ashamed of conducting any form of business at any retailer in my entire life. If a customer gives you their ID Document and you can verify the picture and the ID Number, there is NO further identification required. If I walk into a bank today and give them my card to withdraw money and they ask for my ID document and I then provide it, they CANNOT refuse me my funds. If this is how Truworths treats their long and loyal customers, I want my account closed immediately. There are millions of people sitting at home without employment who will gladly serve your customers with respect and NOT a sense of entitlement with quiet racial remarks which was translated by one of the customers on the floor on my way out. This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable and people reflecting this kind of behavior on social media is reprimanded accordingly and jailed. I AM A WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN AND PROUD TO BE ONE! If your staff has a problem with your customer’s skin, you have a much bigger problem than the current ***** you are experiencing. I am NOT a ******** as indicated by your staff. If Truworths has to put additional processes in place to combat their high level of *****, then I suggest Truworths sends out proper communication to its account holders to advise them that there will be new processes put in place. We as customers can then decide whether we want to endure this level of verification or not. We have accounts in order not to walk around with bags of cash and put ourselves at risk. If you cannot manage your ***** risk internally, do not educate your staff to find a ******** in each of your customers. If my business as a white South African is questioned in this fashion every time I enter your store, then I can always shop at any other retailer who will treat me with respect and dignity and NOT with an attitude because of the colour of my skin.
