bad service

I purchased a phone , the charging pin was quite tight to a point that I have to force the charger out/in but I thought maybe because its new I will see in a couple of days because just the week before I exchanged a device for this one as the previous devise was faulty. On the 4th day after receiving this new device the phone fell from my pocket (I was sitting in my lounge on a low chair) the phone fell face down, I picked it up, looked at the screen and saw no damage then placed phone on the table. When I later wanted to use my device it didn’t switch on, I then realised something was wrong and the next day took it to the store. The consultant looked and her words were “this is strange there is no damage on the phone , I will get someone from the back to look” she took the device with her and returned with another consultant who showed me the tiny crack on top corner of the screen and her words were, “I needed to hold the devise up to a light to see the crack”. The consultant advised me she will send it to MTN for a warranty assessment and maybe they will repair it free of charge as I’m in 7days however she can’t promise anything as it is physical damage so they might charge for a repair. I was in agreement to this and the following week received a sms from MTN quoting me R985 to fix a phone which cost R2500. I spoke to the MTN consultant and expressed my concern with the fault and they directed me to the store when I got to the store they directed me back to MTN, I called MTN from the store and the consultant advised me that there is nothing they can do as it’s not a manufacturing fault. I expressed my disagreement in the fact that a new phone fell less than 30cm from the ground and I’m left with a completely broken LCD and a tiny crack in the screen costing me 40% of the phone value to fix. This is ridiculous, I would have understood it being an old phone that fell more than a couple of times now causing so much damage but a brand new phone that fell once to be that greatly damaged I believe it is a manufacturing fault as the product is poorly made if it can cause that much damage after falling not far from the floor. I’m upset that Truworths didn’t do anything to assist me in this matter as I purchased from them and I liaised with them but all they keep saying is that “ we can’t go against what MTN is saying” I didn’t want to take the device back and informed the consultant that I’m going to take this matter further but the consultant advise me that I have to keep it even though I wasn’t happy to have it.

Thank you for your post.

Cellphone returns are subject to the terms and conditions of the service provider, in this instance being MTN.

We acknowledge your frustration regarding your recent experience at one of our stores. We have however investigated your concerns raised, and were advised that the handset was submitted to an MTN Service and Repair Centre for a warrantee assessment.

As the fault found was not as a result of a manufacturing defect, we will unfortunately not be able to exchange or credit the cellphone. Should you wish for the cellphone to be repaired, you would have to carry the cost required. Further to this, we confirm that this has been explained to you.

Kind regards,

Truworths Online Team

i did not want to exchange or have the phone credited, clearly the consultant did not advise you of my concern and to top it all off, insurance was not offered to me upon sale of the device. the consultants at Truworths had no concern for me or my issue, she just repeated the same thing over and over abruptly so i dont feel like going into that as im not complaining about the bad customer experience i had and no communication etiquette, my complain is logged for having to carry the full cost of the repair. I will take this up with the ombudsman as I refuse to pay that much for a new device to be fixed. I don't mind paying for a repair but I am disputing the high cost quoted for a new device to be fixed that was poorly manufactured.
