Account issued without account protection

My late father had a Truworths account. Upon advising you call center he passed I sent them the death certificate. No to longer after we received a letter requesting the letter of Executorship. We are still awaiting the letter of executorship however I fail to understand how acccounts are issued to customer without account protection. Is this compulsory when taking an account?
