Toyota Yaris - peeling Clear Coat

Although my Toyota Yaris is out of warranty with Toyota (they only have a three year warranty), I recently bought a Yaris (now 9 years old) in very good condition. Two previous owners known to myself who looked after the vehicle well. Some months ago, I noticed that the clear coat of the vehicle was peeling and it has continued to do so, on the roof and hatch back door and above rear lights. I took the car to a Toyota dealer locally and the one chap said he had seen this on the Yaris models before. On googling the problem I see that there is a problem with the darker, particularly blue metallic colour cars with peeling clear coat. There are many links. The only real way of solving the problem is to respray the car. Cost: between R8,000 - R15,000.

I am still paying off the vehicle. This little modern car was bought by myself so ensure that I had a good running car for many years/ or a good resale priced car if need (it being a Toyota and economical).

Now - heres the thing - the car has devalued extensively due to the peeling clearcoat for obvious reasons.

I approached Toyota Customer Care with regards to what the options were and what they would do about it.

The initial response was quick.

I then received a call from some chap (he called me when I was busy at work where I cannot take calls, didnt get his name) who said that the peeling coat must have been something I used on the car or that it was left out in the sun all the time.

Not so to both.

He said he would get back to me after speaking to his superior. No further communication has been received even after emails twice and sending links proving that this is not something that happens due to car wash, outside parking, etc.

I have heard nothing. I have however, resent an email with plenty of links regarding the problem with the initial coating of the car.

Whilst I do realise that Toyota cannot recall all the Yaris' that have this problem, I did expect a slightly more helpful approach and certainly an offer to check the car and solve the problem somehow.

It is s manufacturers fault.

Therefore down the line, regardless of age of the vehicle, they knew there was a problem and no response or silence is not the was to solve this problem.

I cannot afford to respray the vehicle; It will continue to get worse; the vehicle is losing value all the time; the underneath paint is powdery and will go through to the metal shortly; I am frustrated that I am driving a car that is peeling (like a car 5 times older) and there is no solution to the problem except respraying;

I expected a more responsible reaction from Toyota and certainly the fact that they are very aware of the problem, to take ownership of what has happened and offer a solution instead of fobbing me off.
