Corolla CVT gearbox
Hello Peter, I bought a new 2017 Corolla 1.8 Exclusive CVT. I noticed that the gearbox behaved strange (jerking when accelerating) since I had the car but thought that it's normal for a CVT - "searching for the right gear" - until a third party who drove my car convinced me at the end of February 2020 (about two weeks after the warranty expired) that it wasn't normal. I decided to take up the matter with Toyota. Just before the initial Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, at 35000+ km, a month after the warranty has expired, Rola Toyota, Somerset West, drove my car and confirmed that the CVT gearbox performed erroneous and needed attention. On 1/06/2020, the first opportunity after the initial lockdown Rola performed a diagnostic check and ruled the replacement of the CVT gearbox. They quoted my part (50%) of the replacement cost at R41,133.00, parts, labour and VAT included. (Toyota was only prepared to pay 50% - hurray! warranty has expired!). I took it up with Toyota SA for possible relief but alas, no sympathy. They merely informed me that it was a final offer (a "goodwill gesture") and advised me to take it. For practical reasons I took my car to Imperial (Motus) Toyota, Cape Gate. Their area manager agreed that they would replace the gearbox as per the quoted price. They completed the replacement and I was invoiced for R45,658.00 since, according to them, the quotation was "incorrect" and they keep my gearbox. On top of that they found the A/C*******) was defect and needed replacement as well. Another R8,942.00 for my account. A spotless, nursed car with 36,000+km on the clock at that stage! When I refused to pay more than the quoted price they just shrugged their shoulders since the quote was "incorrect" according to them, and informed me that they'll charge me R200.00 per day storage unless I released my car immediately. I also wrote a lengthy explanatory letter to the manager at Motus Toyota which I handed over personally but they just ignored me. I got the feeling that Toyota SA as well as Motus Toyota saw me as an enemy and the treatment I received bordered on hostility. Toyota refused to admit or deny when I asked them repeatedly whether 35,000+ km is the lifespan of a CVT gearbox. There goes my believe and trust in Toyota's reliability, customer care and sence of righteousness. Unfortunately also the respect for my car. My advice is to avoid a Toyota CVT transmission. Maybe even a Toyota product. For the record, Lyzette Snyder, workshop manager at Motus Toyota, and Yassin Morgan, Customer Care (what an ironic name) at Toyota SA weren't helpful at all and in my opinion they are not an asset for Toyota. On the other hand .... Regards, Pieter MG Meissenheimer. 37 Royal Ave, Kelderhof, Somerset West 7130 Cell: *** : Email: ***
