Deposit without any mention in T&C's

I opened an account with TFG's new cellphone retailer Hi-Online. When I went to the store to collect my card, and purchase a new Cellphone, I was told that I had to pay a 30% deposit, because it's a new account. I phoned the call centre and not even them could point out in their T&C's where the deposit is mentioned, not even a notice in store. They told me that it is an in-house arrangement. Tricking people into opening an account and the worst is I have to buy something to activate my card. I had to sign a pre agreement, received a page that I signed and no T&C's.

What is the reason someone opens an account? To buy goods that they don't have the cash for at that moment. Now I must buy a phone of R3000 and pay R1000 deposit.
