When is it a 'website error' and when is it *****?
I've had many technical glitches with Takealot before, but this was different. The email had a Camelbak hydration pack advertised at R599, 40% off. When I got to the site, there was a range of packs in different colours, all R599, all 40% off. So far, so good. I selected the black, went to the product page, clicked through to checkout, all the way through to payment. I was about to confirm payment when I noticed the price; now it was R849! So I retraced my steps back to the page with all the different packs in different colours. Sure enough, they were all priced at R599. So I tried clicking on the 'add to cart' on the range screen. Again, it added R849 to my cart (there was another item in there, and a credit ... when you return something and replace it, you have to pay the shipping again, which sucks ... and which was why I was buying the Camelbak, to avoid paying shipping on the replacement product). After taking screen grabs of both the range screen (R599) and the product screen (R849) and sending a mail to Takealot, I was informed by an operator that the shopping cart updates prices in real time, but the website where the products (and prices ...) are displayed does not. So it's not uncommon to click on a product at an advertised price, and find that you're charged a higher price at the till ... and they know it! He pointed out that the site no longer displays the lower price, so they are unable to honour that price. But, I pointed out, it did when I made the purchase and I've proved it, so by your own logic, you should honour it? Nope ... 'sadly, regrettably, truly sorry' ... but nope. To my mind, if you advertise a price on a website, you should honour it. It's a contract between two parties. And if you know that your site is designed in such a way that the amount a client has contracted to could be different when it comes to checking out just seconds later, to my mind, that's just plain *****.
