Things will never be the same again.
Today, I encountered a significant issue with Takealot's return policy enforcement, marking my first problem in over eight years of customer loyalty. I attempted to return 10 LED light bulbs, each in individual boxes and came in clear shrink-wrap. After testing one bulb and discovering they were not dimmable, I put them in the Takealot box and I logged a return - I don't have a plastic sealer and there is no why to open it without tearing. Surprisingly, I received a message from Katelyn.P with attached photos, stating that my return had been declined. This was a first for me, and there was no mention of any further steps or whether the items would be returned to me at all.
Additionally, I faced issues with 2 other products. A R100 Daylight Osram Globe, which I mistook for a Day/Night model, box arrived creased and wrapped in clear tape. At the time, I didn't document its condition upon arrival. Another separate return was for a Gemini Pool Cleaner, which was also declined due to a slight tear on the corner of the box and a crease in the corrugated cardboard —a condition not present when handed over to the delivery driver who arrived in an unbranded, heavily packed small family car.
I reached out to support and spoke to Jarryd.C, who acknowledged the issue with the lights was obviously not my fault, but noted the visible damage to the Gemini box which I wasn't aware of at the time its state when handed over. Later, I spoke with my dad who boxed it and handed it over and he was shocked, saying that it must have happened in the collection or warehouse process. I then spoke with Ethan.Pa, a more helpful support person, who agreed to discuss a possible exception with a manager for the remaining Gemini Pool Cleaner return. I am currently awaiting feedback on the three refunds.
This experience has left me feeling betrayed by a company I once trusted implicitly. After spending significant amounts over the years and relying on Takealot’s excellent return service (Their only USP), this incident has eroded my confidence. Takealot once eliminated the usual anxieties associated with online shopping, setting it apart from other e-commerce platforms. However, this new stringent approach to returns could alienate loyal customers like myself (Which it has). The ratio of my returns to completed orders over 8 years is fractional... As I wait for a resolution, I can’t help but reflect on better times and consider supporting smaller e-commerce sites that prioritise customer experience.
