Rejected Order for incompatible device

I bought a controller for my Xbox and it was not compatible upon return the order was rejected as it was used.. how else can you test if the controller works... I just wanted a credit to buy a compatible controller but now I am being sent the incompatible controller that I can't use and will now need to dispose of for half the price. There is no warning stating it does not work but there were comments about the product being a good replacement for the Xbox controller
