Inflexible return policy

On the 3rd of August, I bought amongst other things, a sippy cup for my grandchild's first birthday, which was given to her on her birthday on the 6th of September. She proceeded to knock it against the table 10 seconds after receiving it, and it cracked down the one side. Returned it to Takealot on the 15th of September, to be told they will not refund as it's outside their return window. I understand the time period etc. but what this tells me is to not buy a birthday gift from Takealot, as you cannot guarantee it's going to be fully tested before their 7 day policy expires. I can understand this for an electronic or white goods item, but for a sippy cup that is supposed to be able to handle knocks from a baby, it doesn't make sense.
