Disappointed with Takealot’s Handling of Defective Product Return
I recently purchased a headboard from Takealot, and unfortunately, the product arrived defective. Upon unboxing, I noticed visible damages, which I immediately reported to their customer service team, expecting a hassle-free return process in line with the South African Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
However, instead of taking full responsibility for collecting the defective item—as required by law—Takealot insisted that I repackage the product at my own expense before they could arrange for collection. This is highly unreasonable, considering the headboard was delivered in a box that had to be torn open, making it impossible to reuse.
According to Section 56(2) of the CPA, it is the supplier’s responsibility to cover all costs associated with returning defective goods, including packaging and collection. Despite bringing this to their attention, I was still asked to handle the packaging myself. This is poor customer service and a clear disregard for consumer rights.
I expected better from Takealot, especially given its reputation as a leading online retailer in South Africa. If you’re considering purchasing large or fragile items from them, be aware that returns may not be as straightforward as they claim.
I hope Takealot reconsiders its policies and aligns them with the legal obligations and fair treatment of customers. I will be escalating this matter further if necessary.
