Defective Product Rejected – Safety Risk Ignored by Takealot

I am disappointed with how Takealot has handled a clear product defect and safety concern.

I purchased a GetUp 4-in-1 Adjustable Weight Set (40kg) in October 2025. I only opened and started using the equipment in early February 2026. After approximately one week of normal use, the kettlebell handle detached mid-swing during a workout.

This was not a minor issue — the weight separated while in motion, creating a serious risk of injury or damage to property. This is clearly a structural failure and not “wear and tear.”

The condition of the equipment reflects minimal use and is still close to new to prove that it was opened recently and barely used.

I submitted a return request for an exchange in good faith, as the product is clearly defective. However, Takealot declined the return, initially citing “user damage,” and later referencing the 30-day return window — despite the fact that defective products fall within a 6-month protection period.

What is most frustrating is the inconsistency in responses and the failure to acknowledge the core issue: a product that is not safe for its intended use.

As a long-time Takealot customer, this experience has significantly impacted my trust in both the products sold on the platform and the way customer issues are handled.

This matter will now be escalated further in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, as consumers should not have to fight this hard to resolve a clear product defect — especially one that poses a safety risk.

I hope Takealot reconsiders its position and addresses this matter appropriately.
