Hi Superbalist,

I would just like to write to you regarding a recent incident I experienced while applying and interviewing for a role at your offices.

After seeing a position advertised for a Social Media manager on the Superbalist pages, I sent my CV, portfolio and a summary of my Social Media strategy through to the relevant email address.

To my surprise, I was actually called for a face-to-face interview. I could not contain my excitement, because I never actually thought I'd be called back. (Any of my friends would tell you that working for Superbalist has been my dream job)

At the time I had been offered a job at another global advertising agency. But when I heard back from Superbalist, I asked them to give me more time, in order to be able to interview with you.

It was clearly communicated to the interviewer, that I was flying down from Durban in order to attend the Interview. Everything had been confirmed and set dates and times were put in to place.

So it was arranged, and I took off work for the day, booked flights to the value of R1800 and made a day trip to come for the interview.

Upon arriving, I was greeted by the interviewer Megan Van Biebuyck. She seemed surprised to see me. She asked: "Umm, didn't you get my email" So I responded saying that I had been traveling all day to get to her, and hadn't checked my mails. She went on to tell me that she had in fact cancelled the interview with me (two hours before the set time), because they had potentially found someone else within the team to handle the role.

She then decided that she would "hear me out anyway"...

I was seated informally at a table in an exposed area, in front of other interviewees and employees, and I was told that the other relevant team members were not available to attend the interview.

Even though I was totally thrown by the initial greeting, and space in which I was to present my work, I went on to show Megan various materials I had prepared as well as printed presentations which I had prepared according to the job specs.

She asked me a few irrelevant personal questions, briefly flipped through the through the first two pages, of one of my strategy documents and said: "SHAME, thanks for doing this"

And pushed the documents back to me.

I was told in conclusion that I would be contacted the following day regarding the final decision and follow up.

I left after a less than 10 minute interview feeling humiliated with all of my documents in hand.

Now, I'm not one to complain, I don't post dramatic posts online, or even return food if a waiter messes up my order. I'm super chilled and pretty much go with anything.

HOWEVER... I am a professional! I'm good at my job, I work extremely hard, and I'm committed to anything I set my mind to.

All I'd like to say to you is,

I'm not bitter that I didn't get the job, really, that is life! And it's whatever... But the way this whole situation was handled was unprofessional and lacked basic work ethics. I'm sure you are the coolest place to work and I have no doubt that everyone wants a shot at working for you. The way you portray yourselves online gives people a sense of culture and community, which I'm sure anyone would love to be a part of. I was disappointed to realise that the work environment I was exposed to at Superbalist is the opposite of that.

-If you advertise a role online - make sure it's actually an available position

-If someone flies in for an interview from another city - Don't cancel two hours before

-If someone prints out presentations - at least keep them, even if you're going to chuck them 2 mins later

-If you say you'll follow up - just drop a quick mail with the final outcome

-If you're going to interview a smart person - Don't be condescending

.....That's really just some of the basics, and clearly you have some working for you
