STss is a *******
I am a tenant at a complex whereby Stss is contracted to run the prepaid electricity metering. We used to spend R400 per month on prepaid electricity and when Stss moved in we now spend R600 for the same amount of units. There is something wrong here and STss is ripping people off. I have made a report to Eskom and NERSA and waiting to see if an investigation is commissioned.

It is firstly important to note that STss does not purchase and sell electricity. STss uses pre-paid meters to recover electricity costs on behalf of the Body Corporate. The Trustees of the complex have determined a rate per kWh to charge owners in order to recover sufficient funds to pay the bulk account. This bulk account, either direct from Eskom or the local municipality, comprises of various costs. As an example: 1. Network Demand Fee - cost required by the Body Corporate. 2. Environmental Fee. 3. Rural subsidy. 4. Administration Fee. 5. Charge per kWh. 6. Value Added Tax. 7. Total of the above.
The total cost of the above is then divided by the total kWh's consumed in the month, to determine a collective rate to charge per kWh to cover item 7 above. The final kWh rate is therefore normally higher than just item no 5 as it has to include the total sum of all the items charged, plus the cost of the vending system.
Remember too that both Eskom and City Power have recently increased their rates, and general consumption during winter time is higher, as an example the geyser and stove uses more electricity during winter, etc.
