Brooklyn Ster-Kinekor is not worth your time!
Let me start off by saying that this review is meant solely for the Brooklyn Mall Ster-Kinekor in Gauteng.
I would honestly suggest going to literally any other theatre (including a home-made job in your backyard.)
I went a weekend or two back and I was honestly just disappointed. My family and I went to the theatre. Firstly half of the cinema's have broken airman's. I wouldn't usually grumble about this because life happens and nothing is instant, however these cinema's have had broken aircons since December 2016, I remember because we went to a film during the December heat and instead of an actual cooling system, management had set up four fans at the bottom which obscured the front row, made it harder to hear and almost gave the audience a heart attack when one of them fell over. We're almost clocking a year and a half later-no change. The only major difference is how the number of broken cinema's seems to have grown.
Once in the cinema it became apparent that we would not be able to watch any previews. The lighting was so high that giant orange slits blocked the screen and you were only able to view the screen properly when the movie started and the lights dimmed.
Once out the film we headed to the bathroom-big mistake! The bathrooms are disgusting. Half of the toilets are out of order and the few that aren't have broken locks, toilet seats or hygiene challenges.
While waiting for my parents to finish their movie, my sister and I sat on a pleather couch that was so worn it looked about 20 years old. The upholstery was coming off of it and the foam was pushing through when you sat down.
I eventually went to a ticket collector to ask when my parents' movie finished. Instead of an answer I received a hand in front of my face to signal that I should be quiet and was told not to disrupt her while she was working...there was no one in front of her who needed assistance.
Overall it was disheartening and I don't think it'll improve anytime soon. The one time previous when I brought this up with management I was told "everything was being sorted out" this was a year and a half ago after a fan fell over during my film.
Additionally I do not think that putting up multiple signs "apologising" for an immense amount of out-of-order equipment and sanitation is acceptable. Especially if said signs appear to be the sole solution to all the issues.
Personally I don't think Ster-Kinekor as a whole is the issue. I still prefer them as my cinema of choice and their popcorn is the best! However I would strongly advise avoiding the Brooklyn Ster-Kinekor. When spending over R500 as a family on tickets, you want your money to go to an actual enjoyable experience. Not an experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
