You Recycle Accounts?
My medical aid paid out a sum of money to me and paid it into an old Standard Bank account that I had closed years ago. I acknowledge that I should have updated my banking details with my medical aid, however, usually what happens is the money bounces back because the account no longer exists. HOWEVER, Standard Bank don't seem to think there are enough numbers on this planet, and decided to recycle old account numbers. Therefore my money paid into someone else's account. Standard bank have not been willing to assist me at all in getting this money back. They have referred me to my medical aid and then to lay a charge against the new account owner (whose details they obviously won’t give me) with the SAPS. The SAPS took this to court and the judge ruled that this is an issue that Standard bank need to assist with. I find this shocking. Just acknowledge that you messed up by recycling account numbers and offer to assist in getting the funds returned? On Facebook I received the following response: "If money is paid into an account that has been issued to a new client and the funds are used, there is nothing that we can do to assist you if the account holder has used the funds or does not want to make it available for a recall. This then turns into a Civil matter and you need to approach the courts for assistance" WOW, thanks Standard Bank, you are such a joke.
