Working for this company was a dream, UNTIL...
So here's a really sad story. After finishing matric at 18, I've always wanted to work for Standard Bank. I've worked extra hard in everything I did so that ultimately I would be in a position to he employed by them. I've been turned down multiple times but kept trying. Now, at 27, after banking with them for close to 10 years and being yelled at by a guy at the info desk, being told they could not help me for beneficiary statements, and so much more hurtful bullying...Friday had got to be the worse. I went to Hillcrest Standard Bank to convert R300 into R10, R5 and R2 so that im able to constantly have change for tips at hand wherever I go. So naturally I went to the bank. I was laughed at by the gentleman / teller, and was asked if I banked with them and where am I coming from? I was tempted to ask if didnt bank with them and had an interest in banking with them, would they then only help me? But Instead I took out my card and proved that I indeed bank with them. He then went on to ask me what I needed the money for and I ignored this. He went on to ask if I need it for the shop or personal? And at this point I felt REALLY spoken down at and everyone was staring. Being a soft spoken shy person, my anxiety was shot! I couldn't wait to get out of there... The moment I walked out, I kind of knew that this dream was not something I'd want to pursue anymore. I believe that staff embody the culture and the vision of the bank... in all of my experiences with standard bank, it was really poor. Not unsatisfactory, just poor... and this is something every poor person goes through when walking into a bank. I just hope it changes some day for us all. Its not a good feeling being talked down on.
