Unsolicited overdraft

about 2 months ago i switched to another bank because i am unhappy with standard bank. Not feeling like standing in the lines again to close the account, I just changed my debit orders and salary to my new account and transferred everything (except for the minimum ~R250) thinking that the balance would hit zero and eventually be closed. Big mistake. The monthly fees keep pushing my balance into the red.

Now my question is:
Why/how am i being pushed into overdraft when i never asked for it?

As far as I know, credit may only be provided if it was explicitly app**** for by the customer. And if I hadn't looked at the account by chance, years would have gone by and I would have been in a pit of debt. That sounds ******* to me.
