Student Loan Application Rejected
Several months ago, my daughter app**** to several universities in Australia and she was duly accepted. We duly app**** for a student loan but on both occasions we were declined INSTANTANEOUSLY. We accepted this based on the assumption that the amount for which we app**** was to great. Subsequently my daughter app**** at WITS and was duly accepted. We then app**** again and assumed that as the amount being app**** for was much less than previously app**** for, it would not be a problem. But no, guess what, WE WERE ONCE AGAIN DECLINED INSTANTANEOUSLY. I realise that computers are fast but this fast was truly impressive to say the least. I then requested that I be provided with exact reasons as to why my application was declined, I was provided with the following reasons: - that I may have a judgement against my name and was provided with a name of a company from whom I could obtain a credit report. - that my accounts were not in "good standing" - That I had insufficient surplus on my monthly income to cover the repayment.
I duly obtained the required credit report and was provided with low credit risk result. Insofar as the management of my current account was concerned, I personally confirmed via the branch that my accounts are in good standing for the past several months (she only went back six months) and my rating at the bank itself was in good standing (I have been banking at Standard Bank since I started work in the early eighties).
This information was duly passed on to Student Loans in Durban and I was called by a agent and requested from her the name and number of a senior person with whom I could take the matter further as I was extremely upset to put it very mildly. I was informed that she could not provide me with this information as they only communicated via e-mail. This to me was strange because do people at the bank communicate with code names? The agent also informed me that on my application she thought she saw that I mentioned that I did not bank at Standard but had no answer for the fact that one of the reasons given was that my current account was not in good standing. Eventually I was also told it was a "system error"
My question, how is it that my application was rejected? Surely Standard Bank does a "due diligence" on each application. How is it, that based on the reasons given for the rejection of my application, I was able to show the complete inaccuracy of the facts within the space of a day or two?
Also, surely if it was a "system error", no student loan application could have been processed by the bank in general or does this "system" decide to identify a person at random whose application it decides to decline based on no sound reason?
Eventually the loan was approved with very little time to spare as my daughter and I had to leave for Joburg on the 25th January 2018.
Obviously I have not heard a peep from Standard Bank as they are most likely hoping that I would not take the matter further but lets see what happens from here - social media is a *****!
You have no idea how heartbroken my daughter was when our initial applications were declined when she had the opportunity to study overseas was destroyed by an *********** bank along with their ****py system.
