I rarely leave reviews, especially bad ones but I just feel like I am getting the short (and expensive) end of the stick.
I have had a student achiever account for about 9 years now. I used the account for probably about three of those 9 years. After which I lost my wallet. I then forgot about the account (which I realise is my bad). I recently (2021) rediscovered said wallet in an old drawer with the card in. I then took the card to the standard bank in centurion with the hopes of just closing the account.
To my surprise there was a massive overdraft on the account (Roughly R5000). Which was weird because the account was never in over draft when I lost my wallet. So what happened was that Standard bank Charged me the monthly fee or R9.90 until the money in the account ran out and then continued to charge me the R9.90 including an account management fee and an overdraft penalty. So this built up to the R5000.00. Luckily when I did go into the Centurion brand I spoke to Petrus Nkosi (who now works at a different branch) He informed me that this has happened to a few people and that they have a debit balance campaign that allows them to s**** the over draft fee and the open a myMO account for you. He said that he would handle it and that I should just send him a mail to follow up.
I did not get any further correspondence from him or standard bank regarding this matter and when I went in today to find out what is happening it turns out that the campaign was only active in 2020 and that it is no longer active and now I owe them even more money.
I just don't understand how I can be charged an account management fee a monthly fee and a penalty for the over draft and they can't send me a SMS or call me to notify me that I owe them money. But I get sms's regarding promotions etc. But nothing regarding the R6700.00 I now owe them. I think it is ludicrous that the bank allows the account to run this far into overdraft and still left it to me to contact them regarding the account even though it has not been used for nearly 7 years the monthly fee still goes off.
Now the only way I can close the account is to transfer the over draft amount into what is supposed to be a "student saver" account before I can close the account.
Needless to say me and my family will be moving away from Standard bank.
