Standard Bank Student Loan: A Financial Trap and a Customer Service Nightmare

I am writing this review to share my deeply frustrating and disheartening experience with Standard Bank’s student loan system. What I initially thought was a lifeline for my education has turned into a financial burden and a lesson in how poorly a bank can treat its customers.

I started my student loan with Standard Bank in 2017, paying the interest monthly as required. I continued this for 2018 and 2019, during which I had to take out more money to cover those years. By the time I completed my degree in 2019, I had paid thousands in interest alone.

Then, COVID-19 hit. Like many others, I struggled to find stable employment and only secured a proper job in 2021. Standard Bank contacted me that year, asking if I was employed and ready to start repaying my loan. I agreed, thinking I was finally taking steps to clear the debt. But I later discovered that they didn’t even start charging me until a year later, in 2022. How does a bank make such a critical error?

In 2022, I had to take on the full responsibility of the loan as my mother could no longer assist me. This change caused my interest rate to skyrocket to the higher end of the bracket. I was then informed that I needed to start paying at least R5,500 per month.

Since the beginning of this loan in 2017, I have never missed a monthly payment. In fact: • From 2017, I paid approximately R1,500 monthly. • In 2018, I paid roughly R2,600 per month. • From 2019 to 2022, my payments increased to about R3,600 monthly. • Since 2022, I have been paying approximately R5,500 each month.

How much have I already paid into this loan? Despite consistently paying these large amounts, the principal amount barely seems to decrease, and the majority of my payment is eaten up by exorbitant interest charges.

Adding to my frustration is Standard Bank’s absolute lack of customer service. In 2023, I went to a branch to request an interest rate review, only to wait for months for a response, which eventually came as a dismissal. They told me they don’t do interest rate reviews anymore. How can a bank expect loyalty when it blatantly refuses to provide assistance to customers?

The student loan department is virtually nonexistent. Calls and emails go unanswered, and branch visits yield no resolution. In my case, it took multiple calls, branch visits, and complaints just to get partial clarity on my account. How is this acceptable for a bank that claims to support students and education?

The experience has left me disgusted. Standard Bank markets its student loans as a way to invest in your future, but in reality, it feels like a financial trap designed to exploit young people. How can a student who has just entered the workforce afford R5,500 monthly while managing living expenses in today’s tough economy?

Like the other reviewers I’ve seen on platforms like Hello Peter, I feel misled, overcharged, and abandoned by this bank. If Standard Bank truly cared about students, they would: 1. Provide transparent, consistent communication about loan terms and interest rates. 2. Offer reasonable interest rate reviews for customers in good standing. 3. Train staff to adequately support customers with student loans.

To anyone considering a Standard Bank student loan: I urge you to think twice. This loan has not only caused me financial stress but also diminished my trust in the bank entirely.

If my concerns are not addressed promptly, I will escalate this matter to the Ombudsman. This is not just about my loan—it’s about ensuring that others don’t fall into the same trap.

Standard Bank, I hope this review serves as a wake-up call. Your student loan system and customer service urgently need improvement.
