Standard Bank *********** clients through bank charges during lockdown!!!

I had a very bad experience with Standard bank, this company is looting people's hard earned money through charges during this covid19 lockdown. I have lost source of income before and during lockdown, therefore I couldn't meet my debit orders' obligations, my bank account balance went on terrible minus. I went to the bank to try and close my account...guess what? The bank doesn't allow the client to close the account if it is sitting on minus. So I left it like that. Beginning of August, SARS paid some money to my account, and standard took almost all the money transferred to my account, an amount of +- R4800 on charges owed to them. This is not fair, as the bank didn't allow me to close my account when I went to close my account with them. Mind you I am still not working, the rental I am paying for my accomodation and my son is still in arrears, I am struggling to put food on the table, I am a trainer/facilitator by profession but the training industry has been hit hard by lockdown. This is quite a blow, and the bank is *********** the struggling people at this time. We cannot allow the banks to do this to its clients. Hello Peter please help, I need my money back. They are still not allowing me to close my account with them as there is an amount of R69 I need to pay even though my account was sitting on positive of R1,23 when I wanted to close my account. I do not understand this and I am disgruntling by the service.

Good morning Miss Maloka
I refer to your complaint and would like to apologise for the delay in getting this matter resolved.
The matter has been escalated to the branch manager to assist with this matter and to see if they can reverse the fees and close this account.
I received feedback from the branch manager advising that debit orders has been unpaying before Lockdown, since the beginning of the year. The debit order for the rent has been unpaying before lockdown as well and this why the fees has been charged.
The bank will not be able to reverse the funds as these are debit orders that you authorised to go through your account and had to make sure that you either stopped the debit orders with the companies debiting your account or that there was funds available to cater for the debit orders.
Even though the account had a positive balance after the SARS refund, interest still accumulated for the days the account was in excess.
In light of the above, I am sorry to advise that you are still liable to pay the outstanding amount on the account before the account can be closed.
As a valued Standard Bank customer we would like to hear from you. In the next 24 hours we will send you a survey via SMS. Please would you answer the 3 questions based on your experience with our banker. Please be advised we will not ask you for any personal information in this SMS.
I trust this response is in order.

Kind regards
Clint Petersen

REFERRING TO THE FEEDBACK ABOVE FROM CLINT, I AM STILL NOT HAPPY IF THIS IS THE WAY THE BANKS DO BUSINESS WITH THEIR CLIENTS BY CHARGING EXORBITANT CHARGES WHETHER IT IS/WAS DURING OR BEFORE LOCKDOWN. THEN THE LAW NEEDS TO TAKE ITS PLACE. CONSUMER PROTECTION LAW NEEDS TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM THESE VULTURES...ON TOP OF THAT STANDARD BANK AND MAY BE OTHER BANKS DON'T ALLOW THE CLIENTS TO CLOSE THEIR ACCOUNTS IF THEY HAVE A NEGATIVE BALANCE AS LITTLE AS R69.00, THIS WILL ACCUMULATE TO THOUSANDS AND WHEN MONEY IS DEPOSITED TO THE ACCOUNT, IT IS TAKEN ALL OF IT BY THE BANK.

MY RESPONSE TO YOUR EMAIL BELOW :

Dear Clint C,I am still not happy about the outcome of this complaint, and therefore I will seek legal advice on this matter. As the bank didn't allow me to close my bank account when I approached it.
ON TOP OF THAT, THE BANK AUTHORISED AN OVERDRAFT OF R25 FOR UCount AND YOU ARE CONTINUING TO CHARGE ME AN OVERDRAFT SERVICE FEE NO LIMIT OF R69 FOR THAT....I HAD NEVER ASKED FOR AN OVERDRAFT IN MY ACCOUNT BEFORE SO YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE GRANTED THE BANK ACCESS TO ALLOW AN OVERDRAFT OF THE STANDARD BACK REWARDS UCOUNT TO GO THROUGH IF THERE ARE NO FUNDS LIKE YOU DON'T ALLOW OTHER DEBIT ORDERS TO GO THROUGH WITHOUT FUNDS AVAILABLE. I NEVER AUTHORISED OVERDRAFT, YOU ARE MAKING MONEY FOR YOURSELVES AGAIN ON MY EXPENSE WITHOUT MY PERMISSON...HOW DO YOUR EXPLAIN THIS??
I NEED THOSE AMOUNTS TO BE REVERSED AND PAID BACK TO MY SAVINGS ACCOUNT AND CLOSE MY CURRENT ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY.

Regards
N Maloka

Hello Peter, today is the 23 September 2020, No one from Standard Bank has bothered to reply to the last complaint/reply to their email which I sent on the 09 September 2020. All what they did is to load my inactive UCount reward card with R47 which I don't even know how I accumulated points when I am not swiping the card, may be they are trying to be nice. With UCount card, you accumulate points only when you swipe your bank card registered under the programme. My current account card which is over withdrawn and incurred charges in question of +- R4500 could not accumulate points as it has not been working before and during lockdown so I don't know where Standard ...and I am still having the card with me, which they are refusing to close the account, and I am sure it accumulating other charges. So any legal route I can follow...Does National Credit Act cover this issue. I am seeking legal advise now. Please help.
