Standard Bank poor service
Sim Tshabalala is apparently retiring as CEO of @StandardbankZA at the end of 2027. No doubt he can cite many achievements. My experience suggests, however, that the one he cannot brag about is employing staff with basic arithmetical skills. 1. Card account balance on 2 January 2026 is R58 028.96. 2. First charge on 3 January 2026, by Standard Bank, is R100.00. Even a child in Grade 1 would be able to work out that the balance after that fee should be R58 128.96. But no! 3. Standard Bank's brilliant mathematical staff and systems work out that, if you add R100 to R58 028.96, the balance is R82 316.64. Thus R100 now "equals" R24 286.68 in the eyes of Standard Bank. Please explain Mr Tshabalala. Three hours yesterday, during which I was kicked like some dirty can down the road by three consultants, could not resolve the issue. Mr Tshabalala, please can you explain why your staff and systems are so abysmal. The first thought that came to me, as I looked at this and discussed it with your staff, who clearly have their hands tied by the bank's ridiculous refusal to empower staff to resolve client issues, was that of *****. How can a bank, one of the four major banks in this country, listed on the stock exchange, do this? How can that amount suddenly be debited to my account without any line item or record of how it got there on the statement? But then, there couldn't be a record of how it got there, could it, Mr Tshabalala. Because on yesterday's statement, there is no line item, or combination of line items, indicating the amount of R24 286.68 spent. And the more I assured your consultants that I had not spent that amount on any transaction, or combination of transactions, the more your ineffective and/or inefficient staff, under your management (for YOU are the CEO, where the buck stops) refused to understand what I was saying and the mess your bank had made of my account. Standard Bank should be ashamed of itself for treating a long-standing customer in such a cavalier and aggressive manner. But wait: there's more to this sorry saga! The final consultant I spoke to, who refused to give me his surname (was he not born with one?), continued to lay the blame on me. His first name was Nhlanhla, to whom I regrettably had to give the surname, Incognito, since for my records I need to record the shocking treatment I received. I suspect it was Nhlanhla Incognito who phoned me back as I was about to go into a meeting at 7.00pm and therefore could not speak to him and asked him to call first thing this morning. At the time of writing this, he has not phoned back, and we are well past "first thing this morning". So where are we now? To rub salt into the deep wounds that Standard Bank has caused, which contributed overnight to aggravating a serious blood pressure condition, this morning I find that: 1. My card account as reflected on my computer screen login is blocked. 2. However, the mysterious fictional charge of R24 286.68 (which is my money by the way while Standard Bank was holding it) is no longer there, and the card balance is now well below its limit. This "miracle" was reflected on the card statement that I was able to download in full from the Standard Bank app. Bear in mind, the card is now blocked and I therefore cannot access the statement from my computer - but I can from my mobile app! What sort of system is that? It's breathtaking to imagine the sort of mess Standard Bank's systems are in. Mr Tshabalala, how useless can the bank you manage get?
