STANDARD BANK ISLE OF MAN HAS NO DEDICATED ***** DEPARTMENT – I FOUND OUT ONLY AFTER BECOMING A ***** VICTIM

I am a long-standing Standard Bank customer in South Africa. I did not independently choose Standard Bank Isle of Man. I was recruited and persuaded in South Africa by Standard Bank representatives to open an offs**** account with Standard Bank Isle of Man.

I trusted them because I had banked with Standard Bank for many years. The offs**** service was presented under the same trusted Standard Bank brand and banking relationship. Standard Bank’s marketing promoted its offs****/international banking services and even advertised a “***** line – Report a NEW ***** incident”, including an International contact number.

Naturally, I believed that if ***** ever occurred, I would have access to proper and immediate ***** assistance.

I discovered the reality only when I actually became a victim of *****.

When I identified the *****ulent transaction, I immediately called the ***** line we had been given. I was told that they dealt with South African customers, had no access to the Isle of Man customer database, and could not assist me with my offs**** account.

I was effectively left without the ***** assistance I believed Standard Bank had represented as being available and had to wait until the Isle of Man operation was available the following day.

I subsequently discovered that there was no dedicated ***** Department handling my offs**** *****. I was told that these matters were handled by International Payments.

By the time action was taken, more than 14 hours had passed from my initial ***** notification. A SWIFT recall was then sent, and I dispute that the initial recall was appropriate for the ***** situation.

I suffered a substantial financial loss.

Had Standard Bank South Africa told me when recruiting me that there was no dedicated ***** Department available to deal with my offs**** ***** in the manner I had been led to believe, I would NEVER have opened this account.

What makes the situation even more disturbing is what has happened since.

I have taken my complaint through multiple levels within Standard Bank, including Executive Complaints. Instead of answering the central question about the representations made to me in South Africa and the ***** assistance advertised to customers, I am repeatedly told that Standard Bank Isle of Man is a different jurisdiction and that I must pursue the matter in the Isle of Man.

But that completely avoids my complaint.

I did not approach an Isle of Man bank. Standard Bank recruited me in South Africa. Standard Bank representatives persuaded me to open the account. It was the Standard Bank brand and marketing that I re**** upon.

Standard Bank Isle of Man is not some unrelated bank that I happened to find myself. It operates within the Standard Bank Group.

My complaint is therefore about misrepresentation and material non-disclosure during the recruitment and marketing of this offs**** banking relationship to me in South Africa.

To this day, I am still asking a simple question:

Why advertise a ***** line and provide an International ***** contact if, when an offs**** customer actually becomes a victim of *****, the dedicated ***** response the customer reasonably believed was available is not there?

Instead of answering this question and taking responsibility for how I was recruited and what was represented to me, Standard Bank continues to tell me: Isle of Man – different jurisdiction.

Other South African Standard Bank customers considering offs**** banking should ask one question before opening an account:

If I become a victim of ***** outside normal business hours, who will actually act immediately to protect my money?

I wish somebody had told me the answer before I opened my account.

Thank you for your response.

I appreciate that Standard Bank has stated publicly that it will ensure that this issue is taken care of.

I therefore look forward to a substantive response to the central issue in my complaint, rather than another referral to Standard Bank Isle of Man.

I was recruited by Standard Bank in South Africa into the offs**** banking relationship and re**** on the security and *****-assistance representations made to me. Yet when I actually became a victim of ***** and called the advertised ***** facility, I was told that they could not access my Isle of Man account and could not assist me.

More than 14 hours passed before a SWIFT recall was sent, and I suffered a substantial financial loss.

My question remains very simple:

Please show me where, before my account was opened, Standard Bank disclosed that the advertised ***** facility would not be able to access my Isle of Man account and provide the immediate offs**** ***** assistance required outside the relevant operating hours.

Had this material limitation been disclosed to me, I would never have opened the account.

I look forward to Standard Bank addressing this question directly and proposing a fair resolution of my financial loss.

Thank you for your response.

I appreciate that Standard Bank says it is still investigating the matter. However, I again ask that you address the actual substance of my complaint, rather than ultimately referring me back to Standard Bank Isle of Man.

I was a long-standing Standard Bank South Africa customer. I did not independently approach an Isle of Man bank. Standard Bank South Africa used its existing relationship with me to recruit me into its offs**** banking offering, representatives came to my home, and I was persuaded to open the account because I trusted the Standard Bank name and the banking experience being presented to me.

Your own marketing presents offs**** banking as secure international banking, advertises “24/7 secure digital banking”, and provides a “***** line – Report a NEW ***** incident”, including an International contact number.

Yet when I actually became a victim of ***** and called the ***** facility, I was told that they could not access my Standard Bank Isle of Man account and could not assist me. I subsequently discovered that there was no dedicated ***** Department handling my offs**** ***** and that I had to wait for the relevant Isle of Man operation.

More than 14 hours passed before the SWIFT recall was sent, and I suffered approximately US$14,000 in unrecovered loss.

My question to Standard Bank remains very simple:

Where, before you recruited me and opened this account, did you disclose that the ***** facility being presented to me would not be able to access my Isle of Man account and provide immediate offs**** ***** assistance outside the relevant operating hours?

Please show me one document where this was clearly disclosed.

Had I known the true position, I would never have opened the account.

What is especially concerning is that when Standard Bank was obtaining my business, I was presented with the Standard Bank relationship, brand, security and offs**** banking experience. Now that I have suffered a substantial ***** loss, I am repeatedly told that Standard Bank Isle of Man is a separate bank and separate jurisdiction.

You cannot rely on the strength of the Standard Bank relationship when recruiting a customer and then distance yourself from that same relationship when the customer suffers a serious loss.

I am asking Standard Bank to resolve this matter fairly and reimburse the approximately US$14,000 loss, together with appropriate interest.

I look forward to a direct answer to the questions above rather than another general statement that the matter is being investigated.

UPDATE – STILL WAITING FOR STANDARD BANK’S ANSWER

Standard Bank has still not provided me with a substantive answer.

My question is very simple:

Why did Standard Bank not disclose to me, before recruiting me into its offs**** banking offering, that Standard Bank Isle of Man has no dedicated ***** Department handling offs**** ***** and no dedicated after-hours ***** assistance?

Standard Bank markets its offs**** offering as “the same banking service that you’re accustomed to”, advertises “24/7 secure digital banking”, and publishes a “***** line – Report a NEW ***** incident.”

Marketing photos .pdf

Yet when I became a victim of *****, I discovered that the offs**** *****-response capability was fundamentally different. Standard Bank Offs**** has since written to me officially stating that SBIOM has its own “products, services and operating model” and that SBSA’s “infrastructure, service capabilities or support arrangements” do not extend to SBIOM.

So where was this material difference disclosed to customers BEFORE they transferred their money offs****?

I have repeatedly asked Standard Bank to show me one such disclosure. I am still waiting for an answer.

This is important not only for me, but for every South African Standard Bank customer who has money with Standard Bank Isle of Man or is considering opening an offs**** account.

Customers deserve to know what ***** assistance is actually available before they place their money there — not after they become victims of *****.

I am still waiting for Standard Bank to respond.
