Standard Bank fails to assist long time customer

I was very disappointed in Standard Bank and their recent treatment of me. I went to the USA for a short holiday of 2 weeks. I left my STDBNK debit card with my 23 year old son, so that he could buy groceries and petrol in my absence. While I was away I got a message from him to block the card. I contacted him as soon as I could and was told that the card was ****** out of his hand at an ATM by experienced ********s while he was withdrawing money. They immediately withdrew the remaining balance from my card, luckily only R550 that was left. I contacted STDBNK as soon as I could and asked them to block the card and open a ***** case.
Due to the 7h time difference, this was only the next day, as it was already evening in South Africa by that time.
STDBNK have declined to refund me for this amount, on 2 grounds: Firstly that I didn't leave a signed letter of authorisation for my son to use the card, and secondly that I didn't notify them the same day.
I think both reasons are a dodge, especially the second one. I am disappointed because I have had this account since 1992 if I am not mistaken. Clearly this counts nothing in Standard Bank's book. Bad form Standard Bank.
