Standard Bank fails NPO
I serve on the board of a community organisation. The treasurer is an older lady. After many visits to the Parow branch of the bank (every time needing a further signed document), she eventually had the app on her phone, assured that she now could do e-banking. When she tried, it did not work. Thinking that she was perhaps not tech-savvy enough, I then accompanied her. We now visited another branch. Here we waited about one hour before being served (because at the info desk which can house two staff members, only one was present - and he spent long periods of time with each customer), while the queue became longer and longer (and the waiting clients more and more impatient). Eventually we were informed two signatories to the account should come in to sign to load the monthly amount for electronic payments (why were we not told that on a previous occasion?!). The next day, having been referred by the Tygervalley branch to the bigger branch in Durban Road, we again waited for an hour before being served. The service by a (very friendly) lady took another 45 minutes. She eventually told us that the organisation's mandate at the bank required three signatories (which later turned out to be a mistake the Parow branch made when they originally loaded the mandate, as the mandate letter signed by the whole board requesting new signatories clearly ONLY required two signatories). The next day, this time after a waiting period of 90 minutes, we were seen by the same friendly consultant of the previous day (who continuously had to go and consult another "banker"). The organisation's e-services were finally activated after another 30 minutes in the presence of the friendly consultant. You count the hours above a simple task took us as volunteers without any pay for what we do to have a relatively simple issue at Standard Bank resolved. Part of the problem is the fact that there are no dedicated people for specialised jobs. At the end of this saga, I thanked the Lord for not banking with this institution myself.
