Standard Bank failed to alert me of wrongful debits and refuse reversal of my money
I went to Standard bank [Hendrina] to apply for loan on February 2019. The consultant, who was helping me with the loan noticed that my account had lots of debit each totalling less than R 100 which I do not know. I asked for the debits to be reversed, she told me the bank can only reverse January debits. The following day, I decided to do a 3 months statement and found there were more of these debits. I insisted on having the debits reversed; she said debits of more than 30 days are going to be charged at least R144 per debit. To be clear the January debits were reversed; they were totalling R 940. They asked me to fill the form to start this process. I declined to fill the form or sign anything. I asked why the bank never notified me of debits less than R100; this could have alerted me and I would have had more time to come to the bank to dispute these debits. Instead, the bank decided not to inform me of these debits and it is somehow my fault that I never knew of these debits. I did not ask for the bank not to notify me. When I became the client of Standard Bank I was told I was going to be notified of any activity taking place in my bank account via sms; they failed to mention that this excludes debits less than R 100. What is that? Hlengiwe [another bank consultant] took the matter to area manager Irene. After a week I met with Irene. Irene said they can can reverse the money but can only give me 50% of the amount debited. I again declined. She said I should printout the statement and tick the disputed debits but again stressed they can only give me 50% of the debited money. Irene then said, if I refuse 50%, she will have to take the matter to legal department. I printed a 24 months statement and discovered that the wrongful debits started in October 2018. She sent the statement to Irene. For two weeks, she did not come back to me or Hlengiwe. Hlengiwe decided to take the matter to the head of managers. Then after that 3 different people, some from Ermelo and also manager of the Hendrina branch contacted me, all offering me no solutions, just the more of the same thing. There is no way forward, now everyone is saying they are busy. This is the second month since the incident. I’m still waiting. After this I’m seriously considering closing my bank account with Standard Bank.
