Standard Bank Ermelo personnel's unwillingness to assist
I had the most dissapointing experience at the Ermelo branch on Thursday March 24, 2022. Long story short - Standard Bank Ermelo refuse to close the account of a deceased person if you cannot provide them with a letter of authority from his estate. The more I explained that there is no estate as this man possessed absolutely nothing except for his Standard Bank account. This Phumlani (or some name to this effect) had a long turn around of how his wife has to go to court to get a letter requesting a bank statement then has to go back to the bank to get the said statement, then back to court so the court can decide whether Standard Bank has permission to close his account, then back to the bank with this permission and only then will his account be closed.? When I asked her who will be responsible for the bank fees while this whole time consuming process is ongoing, her answer is simply: "oh I can't help you with that.!" I tried to explain that his wife lives 50 km outside of Ermelo, with no car, no money and totally traumatized as she was fully dependant on her deceased husband for survival, meaning I have to drive the 100km back and forth to fetch her, take her to court then to the bank, then back to court and again back to the bank then another round of 100km to her residence and back. All the while there is NO money in this account but according to Standard Bank Ermelo's personnel if the bank fees keep piling up, putting his wife in a debt she definitely can't afford, it's "simply not their problem.!" I could provide her with his ID, death certificate, notice of death, basically everything she needed to confirm his death but apparently that is not sufficient for Standard Bank to confirm THAT SOMEONE IS ACTUALLY DECEASED ! Is this standard practice.?
