Standard Bank does not travel in steerage class

Banked with Standard Bank for a long time. Husband had to make salary sacrafice and increase his overdraft. He got retrenched. Told Standard Bank. They helped by sending vehicle finance file to lawyers and charging R146.20 X 10 for returned debit orders. They also say that they will seize any money going into account.

We have looked again in detail at your and Mr McKeen’s accounts with Standard Bank. Unfortunately, given your financial situation and our obligations under the National Credit Act, it is not possible for us to extend any further credit to you. As things stand, we cannot undertake not to apply set-off to any amounts that might come into your accounts. We strongly suggest that you consider entering debt review with an NCR-registered debt counsellor. It is our view that entering debt review is the best way to enable you and Mr McKeen to rebuild your finances and your credit-worthiness. We will not in future respond to any correspondence from you or Mr McKeen on matters relating to your debt to Standard Bank. No further applications for credit from you or Mr McKeen will be considered until your financial situation has materially improved. We hope to hear soon from your chosen debt counsellor.

i find this letter condescending and rude. All we required was for the bank to increase our overdraft by R15000 in order to pay for repairs to my car and allow for a small amount of peace of mind. Naturally we would have to pay heavily for the privledge. Aspercon owe Tim notice pay, they have not sent the UIF forms thus denying him access to UIF, as well as R88500 in back pay. The CCMA managed to make a mess of the application for mediation and we are waiting for another hearing to be set. We are going to the small claims court on 21 November to try and recoup some of the money therepairs have cost. I am also due for payout on a liquidation claim. Tim has found a contract until the end of the year and remains actively seeking permanent work. We just need a little bit of help to get to a position where we could indulge ourselves with debt review
