Standard Bank – Dishonouring Fees for No Reason

I’m extremely disappointed with the way Standard Bank handled my account. They kept adding an honouring fee every single day even though there was money in my account. I went to the branch to sort it out, and the consultant outright **** to my face, claiming there was “R200 in my account that the bank used to pay something.” That’s false. I know exactly what was in my account, there was R12 at the time, and later I transferred R550. There is no way my debit order was short.

Now my account is sitting on –R218.04 for charges that make zero sense. When I try calling, no one picks up. No help. No explanation. Nothing.

This feels like exploitation, and I refuse to continue using an account where the bank creates problems and then hides from resolving them. I’m moving to another bank because this is unacceptable.

Dear Nthambeleni,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

An honoring fee is charged when a transaction is processed despite there being insufficient funds in your account. This usually applies to transactions that had not yet been banked by the merchant at the time.

Please also note that service fees charged to your account are deducted from your available balance, including any latest and available funds.

The bank covers the shortfall to ensure the transaction is not declined, and the fee reflects that service.

We recommend reviewing your statement for any transactions that may have been banked late while there were insufficient funds available.

Please let us know if you require further assistance on this matter.

 Kindest regards,
 Standard Bank Hello Peter Team
