Standard Bank block my Credit Card because they state I owe R25 on my Credit Card
I am an elderly person who has been with Standard Bank for over 35 years, have and excellent banking record with them and have over R600,000 invested with then either in the Money Market or Fixed Deposits. However Standard Bank decide to block my Credit Card because I had not, according to them paid my minimum R25 installment. This is although on the 2 September I owed a massive R38,33 on my Credit Card and on the 23 September I made a purchase of R304 meaning that I owed a massive R342 at the end of September. What makes the whole matter worse is that I was one of those people who does not do internet banking and only did normal transactions on the ATM machines. This was until Standard Bank decided to close their local branch either forcing me to travel about 50 kms to the nearest branch or try to use the ATM to move money on the ATM. On the 1 October I decided to try moving R500 from my current account to my credit card. I inserted my debit card into the ATM and thought I did rather well in transferring the money into the credit card. However on the 2nd and 3rd October I received emails and sms from Standard Bank advising me that if I did not make my R25 payment immediately this would impact on my credit rating and they would block my credit card. I immediately emailed their Credit Card division as well as their Complaints Resolution Centre. On the afternoon of the 3 October I received my Credit Card statement and was amazed to see that rather than moving R500 from my current account to credit card I had moved R500 from my credit card to my current account. I immediately phoned Standard Bank and was informed that my credit card was blocked. I asked to be put through to a more senior person and a very kind lady, after me answering the normal security questions, reversed transaction. However she could not assist me in paying off my credit card. On the evening of 3 October I again received an email advising that if I did not make my R25 payment my credit card would be blocked. I again emailed the Complaints Resolution Centre but as I have I still have not had any reply to my first email I expect that I will be waiting for a reply for some time. I have a few questions for Standard Bank: surly before sending threatening emails and sms's to their customers they should check their banking history and what investments they have. If one has over R600,000 invested in Standard Bank they would not default on a R25 credit card statement. Also surley it makes sense that if one wants to draw cash from their credit card they use their Credit Card and not their Debit Card. That just does not make sense.
I also would have thought that from a customer service point of view Standard Bank might contact a customer who has been with them for over 35 years and has a good banking history and money invested with them and try to establish if they can assist rather than send threatening emails and blocking their credit card.
However that seems to be what we have come to expect from Standard Bank. This is what computers do rather than having good personal customer service.
I have informed Standard Bank that should they block my Credit Card, I will close my account and withdraw my investments.
