Standard Bank – 10 days, endless transfers, and STILL no paid-up letter
I am absolutely disgusted with the level of service I have received from Standard Bank.
I have been trying to obtain one simple paid-up letter since 18 August 2026. Ten days later, after repeated calls, branch visits, promises, reference numbers and being transferred from department to department, I STILL do not have it.
On 18 August I went to the Standard Bank Richards Bay branch specifically to obtain a paid-up letter. I was told I could not have one because there was still R122.44 outstanding on the account.
Fine. I immediately paid the R122.44 by EFT.
I was then told I could not receive the letter because the payment first had to reflect and that this would take approximately 48 hours.
Fine again. I waited.
On 20 August I phoned Standard Bank. I was transferred from the general department to Collections, then from Collections to Debt Review. Eventually I was told that the account could not receive a paid-up letter because it was not closed.
So I specifically asked them to close the account.
The consultant confirmed that the account had been closed and gave me a reference number. I then specifically asked when I would receive my paid-up letter.
I was told: 27 August 2026.
I waited an entire week.
On 27 August, after 16:00, I called again because no letter had arrived. I was told that the 27th was not over yet and that I should wait until midnight. If I had still not received it, I should call again the following day.
So I waited. Again.
On 28 August I phoned Standard Bank again.
And this is where the situation went from ridiculous to completely unacceptable:
I was now told that THERE WAS NEVER A REQUEST FOR A PAID-UP LETTER.
Apparently the previous request was only to close the account.
After I had specifically asked for the paid-up letter. After I had been given a date on which it would arrive. After I had waited until that date. After another consultant told me to wait until midnight for it.
The consultant then created a new request and, after I made it very clear that I had already waited long enough, told me it would be escalated and that I would receive the letter that afternoon.
At approximately 15:30 I called AGAIN.
Now the system suddenly says I will receive it by 1 September 2026.
What exactly is going on at Standard Bank?
I subsequently spent until after 16:00 being passed around between departments. General Banking says it is not their responsibility. Collections says it is not their responsibility. Debt Review says it is not their responsibility.
One consultant who genuinely tried to assist me eventually admitted that she herself could not find a department willing to take responsibility for the matter.
That statement says everything.
To make matters worse, DebtBusters has confirmed in writing that this Standard Bank account was removed from debt review and terminated, and that because they no longer have a mandate over the account, STANDARD BANK must provide the paid-up letter directly.
So please, Standard Bank, perhaps someone can explain:
WHO ACTUALLY TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR A STANDARD BANK ACCOUNT?
I paid what Standard Bank told me to pay.
I waited the 48 hours Standard Bank told me to wait.
I requested closure when Standard Bank told me the account needed to be closed.
I received the closure reference.
I waited until 27 August because Standard Bank told me that was when my paid-up letter would arrive.
I waited until midnight because Standard Bank told me to.
I called again on 28 August because Standard Bank told me to.
And after doing absolutely everything requested of me, Standard Bank's solution is apparently to move the goalposts yet again and tell me to wait until 1 September.
No. Enough is enough.
I do not need another apology. I do not need another reference number. I do not need another consultant to transfer me to another department. I do not need another promise that somebody will "escalate" it.
I NEED MY PAID-UP LETTER.
This should not require ten days, numerous telephone calls, a branch visit and a tour through virtually every Standard Bank department just to obtain a document confirming that an account which has been settled and closed is paid up.
The most disturbing part of this entire experience is not even the delay. It is the complete lack of ownership and accountability.
Every department knows how to transfer the customer.
Apparently nobody knows how to solve the customer's problem.
@StandardBankZA — I have done my part. Your account has been paid. Your own staff confirmed that it has been closed. Stop sending me from pillar to post and SEND ME MY PAID-UP LETTER.
Ten days to obtain a paid-up letter is not service. It is administrative incompetence.
