Shame on you Standard Bank

The worst experience ever!!!!!!

After I app**** for a Prestige account online I was asked to submit my proof of income because the minimum required income is R25000 per month. I emailed my payslips and 3 months bank statements but Standard Bank did not except this because my income is not paid into my account all on the same day for example my basic gets paid on the last day but my commission gets paid whenever the transaction is finalized and full payment has been received by my employer.

They then advised that I should open a MyMo account for a 3 month period, and this will give Standard Bank atleast a track record and profile to work on.

I opened the MyMo account and came to realize that Standard Bank has got a bank charge called "Honnoring Fee" and what this is, is for when you carry on with your daily life and swipe for fuel, food etc your account only debits when the merchant banks on his side....

Example: Positive Balance in your account of R400 and you fill fuel of R200 then swipe for the transaction and then you go and take R100 from a Non-standard bank ATM, then according to your calculation, there should be a balance of R100 - the bank charges of let say R15, and you go and swipe again for food of R100 because according to the app and your text message, your available balance is still R100, now you have a balance of R0 according to the app. Then this is where the catch is, the bank charges then makes for your account to go into a negative, which now means that the bank is actually helping with a overdraft facility and the honoring fees on these can vary to any amount.

In the 3 months that I have had the MyMo account, my deposits came to R120 000, but still Standard Bank fails to see my minimum income of R25 000 per month and I have had about 12 honoring fee transactions during this time period to where it's as rediculous as a negative account balance of R8 then being charged R132 honoring penalty and this totalled for the 3 months to R1300 in honoring fees alone. Is there no interest percentage threshold???? Whenever I use Uber or Bolt, the fee for the company gets deducted from my account and a few days later, another deduction for this company which is stated on my account as "Intl transfers" which also varies according to the initial amount for the service that has been delivered. And for every airtime purchase, my charges is R1.20 per transaction.

I think the public should maybe take their bank statements of Standard Bank and reconcile these statements for the simple reason, Standard Bank's fees puts our accounts in a negative balance and we, as the customer, does not realize all these small amounts on a day to day basis, the MyMo account that is supposed to be so cheap, has cost me R4800 in bank charges inclusive of the honoring fees the past 3 months ane all of this was done because the Prestige banking department advised me to open this account for them to have a track record to work of.

In December, I reported ***** on my account, and the only thing Standard Bank did was cancel my cards and I am still waiting till today for a representative to contact me and have my ***** related query taken care of.

This was Standard Banks reply to my email after I sent thru my statements with all my concerns marked clearly on each page.

(Please Note: I had to copy and paste Standard Banks response, the original email is with me)

Good day Mr Louis Maree
Thank you for the e-mail.
The fees in question in charged correctly as per pricing guides attached.
Please be advised that some of the transactions that were done there were insufficient funds at the time of the sale in your account – and some transaction were honoured when funds were not sufficient in the account. In respect to the Ucount – the card can be picked up at any of our branches – and you still earn rewards without the card. With regards to disputed transactions that you advised you haven’t done you would need to call ***** to stop your card. Kindly note that a ********* would clean out the account and use all available and accounts linked on the profile – the transactions were made with the valid card at point of sale.
As a gesture off goodwill I have reversed R250 into your account – please review the pricing guide for the fees that gets charged accordingly on the account. I have asked an accredited sales consultant contact you in respect to the upgrade of your account.
Thanking you.
As a valued Standard Bank customer we would like to hear from you. In the next 24 hours we will send you a survey via SMS. Please would you answer the 3 questions based on your experience today with our banker. Please be advised we will not ask you for any personal information in this SMS.
Thank you for your participation
Kind regards
LM

If any other individual had the same experience as what I am currently experiencing, please private message you email address to me.

My response to Standard Bank follows:

I do not agree with you, because of I go and swipe my card now when there is no funds then it will decline the transaction and Standard Bank will not "Honour" me the sale. The negative that Standard Bank is claiming the Honoring fee on, is because when transactions takes place throughout the day and you swipe your card to the last available cent in the account and according to the app information, then that night the bank charges get the account to a negative.

In any event I did not ask for nor agreed to any credit related overdraft "honouring fee" so the assistance is completely on Standard Banks own discretion.

On page 2 of the bank statement dating from 12-09-2020 to 21-09-2020 my account was in a positive balance all the time and with more than enough funds for a R21 Bolt charge against my account, kindly explain how you get to the conclusion that I did not have funds available for the transaction???

Then once that is cleared and you realize that I am not at wrong with the above mentioned transaction, then my recon in red will actually be correct. Please may I ask for the documents that I signed, call recording, Application data or even USSD acceptance of me approving a overdraft "honoring fee" on my account.

Please also forward me what you believe is the threshold on the maximum allowed percentage rate for credit facilities with a bank in South Africa.

On 28 September 2020 I got charged R132 honoring fee for a negative R3.45 on my account, that is 3840% interest!!!!!! And then its not even because of me that the account is in a negative, its because of Standards Banks Application glitch for not deducting the bank fees applicable immediately!

You telling me indirectly that I am being dishonest about all of this!!!

A gesture of good faith by giving me a credit of R250!!!! Are you serious, please keep the R250 for yourself. I will contact the Ombudsman and from there my attorney.

Standard Bank expects of their client to pay full membership fees for the Ucount rewards benefits, but Standard Bank Gateway does not ever have stock of these cards! Irrespective if I get points on the card or not, its not my responsibility to go look for a card somewhere available in one of the branches and I am entitled to complain about service delivery if I must pay the full membership fee but only receiving half the benefits. How do you redeem vouchers if there is no rewards card linked or activated on your profile?????

You have not resolved any of my queries as outlined on my bank statement.

1. Transaction decline fee's - can you not see the positive account balance?????

2. Reward card has been resolved - you made it clear that I must pay my full subscription to enjoy the benefits and I must also go out of my way and go look for a card wherever there is not a stock shortage in cards!

3. What is E-Comm fee's???? If this is internet banking payments, then please explain the R1. 20 fee charged per electronic payment and should you wish to email or text message the POP then that is an additional R1.35 per transaction.

4. We established in your response to my email, that I am a **** because of my concers in regards to transactions going from my account without my permission or knowledge. I am not allowed to report any ***** related concern on my account because you have checked my statement and came to the conclusion that "a ********* would clear my account" and this stupid ********* did not clear my account so then its not ***** ???? Are you being serious right now? I called to cancel my card and stop my account on suspicion of ***** and possible card cloning. But I am sorry, apparently the wrong ********* tapped into my account, made transactions with a place in Amsterdam, Kempton Park, Cape Town, transaction with a place called Kaspe, bought storage on Dropbox, car hire agencies, Google payments etc. These transactions is not only one of each the is a bucket full of them.

5. What is a "intl fee"? I am starting to think that if this is what I think it is "International Transfer" and I see the word Amsterdam on my statement, that this thing making all of these transactions on my account must be high!!!!! Cause now there is international transfers going on the same statement as Amsterdam! What for? To buy Rizzla?

6. The "Honouring Fee" that gets charged if Standard Bank decides to help a person if the account goes into a negative for the banks fee's. Imagine that a withdrawal of R850 from a non Standard Bank ATM ended up costing me R144......

7. On the banking app there is an option that you need to chose when requesting a reversal, why when I made the reversal and made my prompt "No Authorization to debit" must I do it every single month? And why even the function to allow us to "stop a debit order" if Standard Bank can't even get that done????

Please do get a consultant to call me, I would like to please close every account that I have with the bank and I will get in touch with the Ombudsman and/or my attorney, and then I will start a campaign to have this "honoring fee" nonsense to be taken to court, with as many signatures of other Standard bank customers that experienced the same issues than what I am doing currently.

Only people moving forward are the ones of Standard Bank!!!!!!!

Since my last email to Standard Bank on the 8th of February 2021, I have not received any response from them.

My advice to anyone wanting to open up a new bank account, stay away from Standard Bank
