Safety of SB system

Our c/c payment @ Caltex Garage declined on 14/03, twice, although sufficient money in account. SB had an extremely peeved client without sufficient cash plus worry about 'what on earth is going on!' Went on-line and saw c/c not even listed! That was yesterday. Today, c/c on line, BUT what is going on? Also, had our medical aid going off as usual this month, no problem, then by chance I realised something is seriously wrong when I received an sms re another payment which puzzled me, went on-line and realised that a spaghetti mess of normal payments which were reversed, is responsible. Sufficient funds were available. Eventually I had to make a manual payment for our medical contribution. We have been banking with SB for 40+ years, but now we are really getting worried about the safety of SB system.
