Possible Clone at OTM IN Hadfield

On 22 December 2016 at about 11:00 am I wanted to withdraw a cash amount at the OTM near Spar Hatfield. I inserted my cheque card, waited for message to type in my pin. I typed my pin and the bank card was ejected. A message appeared on screen of OTM. "System error".

My colleague then inserted her card typed in pin and withdrew a cash amount without any problem. I then tried for a second time my card was ejected and the same message appeared on screen.

I returned to office and when I opened my work MW Outlook I received an e-mail from Standard B4nk ********** with the following message:

22 December 2016 11:33 AM

Subject: Fix The Error On Your Account.

You have 1 new payment pending on your account.

This transaction can not be processed due to errors present on your account

Log On Here to Review your account

Standard B4nk plc.

Because I just came from the Standard Bank OTM I was sure that this was related to the incident and that Standard Bank wanted to fix the error on my account, The e-mail was addressed to my work e-mail address. Therefore it did not raise any suspicion that this was not from Standard Bank!

I automatically clicked on the link to fix my account, then I receive an sms message at 11:57 "Standard Bank:OTP***XX (5 digits) to access your profile. Never share your PIN or password with anyone. Sent 22 December at 11:57:37 Queries: ********** 000"

at 11:59 AM another SMS message:

Standard Bank: New beneficiary created:STANDARD REFUND with account: ********** 98 (account number) Confirmation OTP:***XX. Queries? ********** 000. Sent 22 Dec 11:59:32

Another two sms messages with almost the same wording at 12:01:12 and 12:07:34

The next morning I paid a visit to Standard Bank Hatfield to Enquiries desk. I informed the consultant about the incident and SMS messages I received. She investigated and referred me to the ***** Department telephonically. I informed them over the phone of the incident and received the following Reference number - Case number 005694.

I waited for feedback until Tuesday 24 January 2017, I called the Standard Bank ***** Department in the morning the consultant informed me that they would contact me with feedback. The afternoon I called again and was informed that Standard Bank would not refund my R5900 transferred to the above-mentioned account number plus the R764 bank charges because of all my bank debit orders that could not be paid successfully due to "Insufficient funds". The reason I received telephonically was:

"You are liable because you clicked on the e-mail you received on 22 December 2016 and assumed it was from Standard bank"

My concerns are:

Where did the ********** receive my Standard Bank account details, plus my work e-mail address and my private cell phone number? Could it be an inside job at Standard Bank?

I was not even offered half of the above-mentioned amount as an ex-gratia payment and nothing in writing from Standard Bank.

What happened to "Treating Clients Fairly" Policy and Legistation, I do not feel that I was treated fairly.

Kind regards

Unhappy client of Standard Bank
