Poor Treatment of SMEs by Standard Bank

I am deeply disappointed with the lack of support and fairness Standard Bank has shown towards our business, which has been a loyal client since its inception in 2016. Despite our long-standing relationship, the bank has failed us repeatedly, particularly over the past quarter.

Vehicle Finance Application: Rejected without a clear explanation or recommendations to address gaps. Overdraft Increase Request: Dismissed by our relationship banker with no constructive feedback or support. Investment Account: Unacceptable delays in processing, causing unnecessary disruptions to our business operations.

Each of these issues required us to submit extensive paperwork, yet the bank couldn’t extend us the courtesy of detailed written feedback explaining the reasons for rejection. Instead, we were left with vague verbal rejections like, "It was rejected," without any actionable advice.

It is particularly frustrating that I had to turn to a senior executive (a colleague from Church) for guidance on how to handle this situation. They advised me to escalate the matter internally, request formal rejection letters, and consider legal action if necessary.

As an SME, we expect our bank to be a partner in growth, not a barrier. We have been nothing but committed to this relationship, and the lack of respect and support is unacceptable.

What I Expect from Standard Bank:

A formal written response detailing the reasons for each rejection and delay. A meeting to discuss how these issues can be resolved and what steps are needed to meet your criteria in the future. Immediate action to improve communication and service to SME clients. Failure to address this will leave me with no choice but to escalate this matter further to legal avenues or move my business to another bank. Standard Bank needs to realize that SMEs are the backbone of the economy, and this treatment is unjustifiable.

I hope this complaint serves as a wake-up call for the bank to improve its processes and take SME clients seriously.
