No service to close account

So I would like to close my credit card but what a palava this is. Is this so that Std bank can charge me more interest and charges? I have been calling the call centre to no avail. I phone and phone and phone but just hold and listen to music and messages. I then have had enough of this and go into Cresta branch on Sat at about 12H30 and wait in the queue for at least 25 mins only to be told by the customer service guy on duty that it can only be done via the call centre as they need to give me a settlement figure. Can you imagine the expression on my face? Std bank can call their own call centre and close my account. I am not paying anything into my account as this has been going on for long enough and I have paid extra in to cover the charges and interest. I would like my account closed and written confirmation it has been done so.
