Low standard Standard.

Standard bank has put me through a completely hellish battle over the last two months.

In the end of May/beginning of April I ordered a cheque card because I was going overseas on April 15th.

They told me the card would take under 10 days to arrive.

After 10 days I went into the constantia branch to find out why I hadn't been phoned.

They told me they had an error in ordering the card and they could do it then but it would take over 5 days.

At this point I was leaving in 5 days.

They then said that I could express order it but that I must pay for the extra cost.

Of course I refused, they then said they would cover the cost and that I could collect my card on the 13th or 14th.

I phoned in and they said the card would most likely arrive before work hours started on the 14th.

I went in at 10am and the card wasn't there.

They said it would be there in the later delivery (after 11am) and before work hours ended (3.30pm).

I waited for their call until 2/2.30pm.

They told me there had been another error and that my card would only be delivered the next day.

I was getting on a flight the next day (15th April) in the morning.

They said it would not be delivered before I was on the plane.

They then promised that MasterCard would deliver a card to me when I could send them an address and date.

The first date I requested was the 26th of May. I was told that MasterCard would contact me to confirm a time.

I heard nothing.

The next date was June 3rd. I was told the same, but then told that I needed to phone MasterCard to confirm.

When I phoned in I was told that the best they could do was send me an emergency travel card. They also said I had to pay for it as I already have a debit card.

I refused again. We never sorted the cost side of it, because I was told that the card would not work for online purchases. The reason I wanted a cheque card was for this reason.

In England (where I am now) booking a train ticket in advance costs less than half as much as buying on the day. I have already spent £24 instead of £11 on a train ticket because I do not have the ability to purchase things online.

The next thing I was told was that my cheque card has arrived in the Constantia Branch (SA).
They said that someone here could fetch it and post it to me.
When I asked why anyone else should have to carry the postage cost, when it had been their error, I just got a weak "sorry".

In the end they said the most they could do was send me an emergency travel card that worked only for swiping.

I have been traveling for two months using only cash and loosing money because of Standard Bank's inability to aid me.

I am genuinely emotional after this ordeal and have no idea how to proceed. I am 18, alone in a foreign country, completely broke and being continuously disadvantaged by my bank.

No bank should be making its customers tear up in frustration. I am appalled by the lack of ownership of their mistake and the disregard they have treated me with.

However all the consultants have been very kind.

My bank is costing me more money than I should be spending, instead of keeping my finances safe.
