Long live the Call Centre of Standard Bank
I have current accounts for 2 businesses and in addition to that I have another 6 accounts of a more personal nature. I have internet access on all these accounts since 2009. I have over the years become estranged from the Bank, as I have been kept away from any personal contact at the branch by internet banking, by ATM access and last but not least by the Call Centre. The present situation is that nobody in the bank knows me and I know nobody in the bank anymore. Around the March month end, when payments needed to be made, I suddenly found that I could not get into my business account on internet, as an OTP and a Card Verification screen had been added to the access procedure. Initially I thought I was connected to a **** bank website. As I had never had a seperate card coupled onto that business account, I just entered the card that I normally used for all my internet access, but that failed. I tried everything, but in the end I had to phone the Call Centre. There are various problems with the Call Centre, one of which is that it is under staffed. I was number 68 in the queu and I gave up after holding on for an hour on my cell phone. I tried again a few days later and then I was number 59 in the queu. In the end I visited the branch where a confident receptionist wanted to show me how to handel the access properly. I am 84 years old but, as a professional engineer, I have used computers and the internet almost every day of my life. The demonstration by the receptionist therefore failed the same way as my previous efforts. She then told me to use the branch computer and landline telephone to contact their Call Centre; we were number 37 in the queu. After about 30 minutes a very ****led voice came on the phone (no high frequency capability in the communication equipment). Furthermore the lady spoke with a strong African accent with a strange intonation. The receptionist took over and the 2 got on ok in their vernacular language. They re-arranged things by coupling my business debit card to the account. Finally I had access to my business account and, as it was already after closing hours, I left. I had been in the branch for about 3 hours. At the office I logged onto the business account to find that it had no beneficiaries on reccord! I have to spend a week to load about 100 beneficiaries. When I tried to access my personal accounts through internet, these accounts had vanished! Tomorrow I have to spend probably another half a day at the branch to recover my accounts with another 75 beneficiaries attached to them. All this trouble because of some clumsy security updates introduced by my bank, without letting me know. This displays again the terrible lack of competence that the country is suffering of. It eats our productivity and it is very irritating to business people.
