Internet banking trouble

Hi,

I needed to pay a company via internet banking and entered their banking details as I normally would when making an online payment. I then got a message saying that the amount could not be paid because the company already exists on the company directory index (CDI) but with a different account number. So I went onto the old banking site and saw that the account number associated with the company was not the same as the banking details that were given to me by them.

I phoned Customer Care where a lady spoke to me in a condescending way, asking me how I could see the company's banking details before the payment was successful. I explained that I went onto the old site, where I could see the details, and recited the account number I was trying to pay in to. She then assured me that the correct account number was associated with the company on the CDI and that I should make the payment, trusting her that it will be successful. I took a reference number for the recorded call in case I had troubles later.

I made the payment using the CDI, and when I received payment confirmation, lo and behold - the money went to the wrong account number! I then emailed customer care, explaining the situation and asking for the payment to be stopped or reversed or something. After emailing, I phoned Customer Care again where a man explained to me how the money will eventually end up in the right account. What makes me upset is that Standard rep**** to my email 2 days later saying that I need to pay them a few hundred rand to look into the issue and try reverse the payment , but they won't guarantee that I will get my money back. How can this be?? I have a reference number where one of their employees assured me that the right company would be paid, and Standard Bank won't take accountability for misleading me or even look into the recorded call?? Why should I pay because a Standard employee gave me the wrong information? I know now that the money will end up in the right account, but I also know what would've happened if the wrong account was paid. They would've made me pay for their mistake.

I've been thinking about switching banks for a while now. The condescending way that the employee spoke to me and the poor service and accountability is the last straw.
